Don't Go Crazy Over Glycolic Acid Peels Just Yet
What are glycolic acid peels and how does it work resulting in better skin? In order to see (and feel) the difference, we first need a better understanding of certain terms about the skin and the processes that are involved.
Some would say that people have always been trying to look healthier and younger even since the beginning. According to some experts glycolic acid peels have been around Asia for hundreds of years.
Basically, chemical peels are cosmetic treatments with the use of certain concentration of chemicals to exfoliate the skin. Glycolic acid peels that can be bought over the counter usually contain a concentration of around 5% to 8%. It is used as an exfoliating agent because of its high acidity as well as its solubility with water. As it is applied to the skin as part of a skin cream or solution, it goes below the dead skin layers and destroys the substance that holds it to the lower layer.
The other components of the skin peel product then combine with the removed dead skin to collect them and then water is used to rinse the debris as well as neutralize what acid remains on the skin. After the skin is washed, the newer and younger skin is exposed which at this point is still tender and red and easily inflamed.
For this reason, after glycolic acid peels, users are warned not to expose the fresh skin to sunlight as it has no adequate protection yet and could easily be sunburned.
There are side effects to this kind of chemical peels aside from red and inflamed skin. It may leave the skin too sensitive requiring several days of recovery. However, because of certain safety regulations, manufacturers will not increase the concentration glycolic acids for fear of legal liabilities.
